Pretense
This project explores the act of pretending to be something one is not, and how perception can be deceiving. It focuses on the duality of such an act, how there is a strong will of another direction underneath this illusion, supporting it. The energy of such will boils strong in secrecy, right up to the tipping point. I was mainly inspired by the Venetian mask, extravagantly shaped and colored, used in carnivals to protect its user’s identity, and fits the concept perfectly. Extendable/foldable forms are also a focus in this project as it is adjustable, which fits well with the concept and on actual people of all sizes. I mainly used boning and adjustable gathering to achieve the changeable forms in the garments. The act of pretense is common and very relatable, and I would like to use this project to discuss this phenomenon.
